Portumna Castle

Portumna Castle

The castle was built prior to 1618 by Richard de Burgo (Burke), the 4th Earl of Clanricarde, and a member of the Anglo-Norman de Burgo (Burke) family.

 

Portumna Forest Park

The lake fringed Forest Park and Wildlife sanctuary is home to a variety of species of birds, deer, red squirrels and pine martens. It is an excellent setting for relaxing walks, scenic pinics and beautiful nature trails.

Derryhiney Castle

Derryhiney Castle

This fortress was built in 1643, north of Portumna. It has stood a number of battles in the area. It can be viewed from Murrays Bed and Breakfast.

 

 

Water Sports

Water Sports

Portumna being on the tip of the Shannon's largest lake, boasts a variety of activities for the water enthusiast, such as ; jet ski-ing, sailing, wind-surfing, boating, swimming, power-boat racing and cruising. Boats can be hired locally.

Pallas Karting

Take a spin to Pallas Karting. Here you can be in the driving seat, jostling for pole position in one of the fastest and most exhilarating sports in Ireland today on Europe's largest Karting Centre.

Cycling

The locality has many cycle trails. Portumna Forest park is particularly family friendly and has trails of varying difficulty. Explore the Slieve Aughty Mountains or the Lough Derg area. Bicycles can be hired at Murrays.

Birdwatching

The water meadows of the Shannon called the Callows is an internationally renowned haven for many birds and other species of wildlife.

 

9 Hole Golf Course

Nine hole golf course and 18 hole pitch & putt. Ideal for those who want a quiet game at a reasonable price.

 

Horse Riding

Flowerhill Equestrian Holiday Farm is an Edwardian Country House set in 200 acres of rich East Galway farmland. It is situated 10 minutes from Portumna.

 

Clonmacnoise

Clonmacnoise, wonderfully sited on the water meadows of the River Shannon, remains one of Ireland's holiest places. Even in ruin, this monastic city of St Ciaran, with its cathedral and churches, its high crosses and round towers, its decorated grave-slabs and pilgrims' paths is a must for all visitors.
